WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team nearly collected its first victory at Carroll University since the 2002-03 season on Saturday afternoon.
But the hosts got a basket in the waning seconds for a 127-126 victory in Midwest Conference action. Grinnell is now 8-12 overall and 5-10 in the MWC, while Carroll improved to 11-3 in the league and 15-4 in all games.
Kyle Parker '17 and
Vinny Curta '19 each had 20 points for the Pioneers, while
Julian Marx '17 scored 14 and
Ky-Sean Johnson '19 tallied 11.
Marx also had five assists, while
Mike Porter '17 came up with four steals and
Griffin Boehm '19 grabbed seven rebounds.
Grinnell fell behind by as many as 16 in the first half before rallying for a 69-67 halftime lead.
The Pioneers twice grabbed leads of eight in the second half, the last at 106-98 on a jumper by Porter. However, Carroll rallied and the contest was tied at 125-all in the late stages.
Curta made a free throw with 20 seconds left for a one-point lead before Carroll scored the game-winning basket. A last-second attempt by Grinnell was off the mark.
