Box Score 2 ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Grinnell College volleyball team got off to a roaring start in its opening match at the Augustana Viking Classic Friday before losing in five sets.
Grinnell beat Marian (Wis.) 25-12 and 25-17 in the first two sets, but Marian rebounded with wins of 25-21, 25-21 and 15-10.
Olivia Fromm '17 pounded down 22 kills for the Pioneers, while
Emily Friedman '19 slammed down 11 and
Ariel Lepito '17 added 10.
Margaret Giles '18 added 51 assists and served two aces. Fromm and Friedman had two aces, too.
Five players came up with double-digit digs, led by
Christine Hood '17 with 21 and
Sydney Vrecenar '18 with 19. Also in the mix were Giles and Fromm with 11 apiece, and
Deanna Taylor '18 with 10.
Emma Willhardt '19 had one solo block and three assists.
Later in the day, the Pioneers lost a close battle to Wisconsin Lutheran College by scores of 26-24, 25-19 and 25-23.
Fromm led Grinnell at the net with eight kills, while Lepito had six. Fromm also had 19 digs, Hood tallied 17, Taylor had 16 and Vrecenar 12.Â
Willhardt had two solo blocks and one assist, while Giles dished out 20 assists.
Grinnell, 4-5 on the season, faces the host school and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday.
