GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team had a tough season opener Saturday afternoon, losing 69-14 to St. Olaf College at Rosenbloom Field.
In his first start at quarterback for the Pioneers,
Tony Bergida '18 completed 12-of-27 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Chip Scott '19 rushed for 81 yards on 22 carries, while
David Taylor '20 had three catches for 47 yards and a score and
Erik Henderson '19 added three catches for 43 yards.
On defense,
Ryan Slager '19 had 16 tackles and two pass breakups.
Kent Hoover '17 and
Hassan Thompson '20 each had seven stops.
St. Olaf grabbed a 20-0 lead before Grinnell got on the board on Bergida's 33-yard touchdown pass to Taylor with 2:55 to go in the first period. Bergida also had a 34-yard pass to Henderson on the drive.
Ibuki Ogasawara '17 added the point after.
St. Olaf led 55-7 at halftime and went up 62-7 in the third period when
Jacob Bernholtz '17 scored from 6 yards out for Grinnell with 5:12 left. Scott had a 12-yard run on the series and Bergida passed 14 yards to
Michael O'Shea '20.
St. Olaf scored once more in the fourth period.
Grinnell hosts Trinity Bible College at noon next Saturday.
