GALESBURG, Ill. – Grinnell College's football team put up a season-high for passing yardage, but still lost a 56-14 decision at Knox College on a soggy Saturday afternoon.
Tony Bergida '18 tossed for a season-best 255 yards, completing 23-of-42 aerials and two scores in a game that saw delays due to bad weather.
David Taylor '20 had a season-best 130 receiving yards on nine catches, while
Carson Dunn '18 added 62 yards of receiving yards,
Max Hill '20 another 33 and
Trent Mayfield '21 a career-best 33.
Defensively, the nation's top tackler –
Ryan Slager '19 – had a game-high 11 tackles.
Rick Johnson '20 and
Hassan Thompson '19 added nine stops each and
Tom Henehan '21 contributed six.
Knox led 21-0 at halftime and later 49-0 before the Pioneers scored on Taylor's 45-yard TD reception from Bergida with 4:28 left in the third period. Bergida also had an 11-yard pass to Dunn on the series.
In the fourth period, Mayfield got into the scoring act when he caught a 33-yard scoring pass from Bergida with 3:39 left. Bergida had seven completions on the series and also passed to Taylor for the two-pointer to conclude the game's scoring.
Grinnell is now 0-2 in the Midwest Conference South Division and 1-5 overall, while Knox moved to 1-1 in the division and 4-2 overall.
The Pioneers play at Lake Forest College next Saturday.
