Grinnell baseball team comes up short in 2 games Friday

TUCSON, Ariz. – Matt Hammond '17 collected five hits on the day and Niko Takayesu '17 added four as the Grinnell College baseball team dropped a pair of decisions Friday.
 
Despite pounding out 12 hits against Carthage College, the Pioneers lost a 13-1 decision. Brad Weaver '18 had a career-high three hits, while Takayesu and Hammond each doubled and singled and Julian Cabrera '19 hit two singles.
 
Carthage opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning, but the Pioneers cut the gap in half in the fourth as Weaver singled to right field, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on Cabrera's bunt single and crossed the plate on Michael Slattery's '18 groundout.
 
Carthage scored four runs in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth and five in the seventh.
 
Sam LaMotte '20 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.
 
Later in the day, Grinnell got out to a 5-3 lead before Allegheny College rallied for a 13-6 victory.
 
Hammond had three hits for Grinnell, one being a double, while Takayesu belted a homer and single. Carson Gampell '20 had a double and single and Kory Czajkowski '20 a pair of singles.
 
The Gators scored a run in the first and two in the second for a 3-0 lead, but the Pioneers burst back into the game with a five-run third inning.
 
Ravi Levens '19 walked with one out, moved to third on Czajkowski's single through the right side and scored on Takayesu's single through the right side. Andrew Shults '19 loaded the bases with a single through the left side before Hammond plated two runners with a double down the left-field line.
 
Gampell added a two-run double to left-center to put the Pioneers ahead 5-3.
 
Allegheny closed within one in the bottom of the third, but Grinnell got a run back in the fourth on Takayesu's solo homer to right.
 
Allegheny scored in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth.
 
Shane Comiskey '18 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.
 
The 5-6 Pioneers take on Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday.
