Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Grinnell College baseball team completed its weekend series on a high note, winning both of Sunday's games to even its record at 2-2.
In Sunday's opener, the Pioneers rolled past Loras College 17-7 in seven innings with the aid of
Matt Hammond's '17 two homers and one double. Grinnell followed with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Lawrence University.
Grinnell pounded out 15 hits against Loras, including a 4-for-4 performance from Hammond, whose eight RBIs were just one behind Mike Nodzenski's school record.
Sam Galanek '18 added three hits and
Andrew Shults '19 and
Ravi Levens' 19 added one each.
Sam Lopez '18 worked seven innings on the mound to get the win.
Loras tallied three runs in the top of the first, but the Pioneers erupted for six in the bottom of the frame. Hammond belted a two-run homer to left,
Brad Weaver '18 had a three-run homer to left and
Niko Takayesu '17 scored on a passed ball.
The Pioneers kept it up in the second inning with three runs via Hammond's homer to left. Grinnell added two runs in the third, as Hammond hit an RBI single to left and later scored on an error.
Loras made things interesting with four runs in the top of the fourth, but Grinnell squelched any hopes of a Duhawk comeback with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Hammond hit a sacrifice fly to center and Levens scored on an error.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the fifth on
Nathan Zaroban's '18 single to right, and added three runs in the sixh on Hammond's RBI double down the left-field line and Galanek's two-run homer to left.
In the win over Lawrence, Grinnell overcame a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the eighth inning. Weaver had two hits for Grinnell, including a double.Â
The Pioneers grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundouts by Hammond and Galanek. Lawrence scored once in the seventh, but the Pioneers moved ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Weaver singled and ended up scoring on a wild pitch.
Lawrence tallied three runs in the top of the eighth for a 4-3 lead, but again Grinnell came through as Weaver delivered a two-run double to right field in the bottom of the inning.
Charles Carr '19 pitched six innings for Grinnell, scattering three hits and striking out four while only walking one.
Ben Binversie '17 was the winning pitcher in relief.
Grinnell, 2-2, is off until March 18 when it plays at the University of the Ozarks.
