Grinnell strikes it big in the 10th inning, ties school record for runs in 22-8 win over Lawrence

MAUSTON, Wis. – After opening Sunday with a 9-6 loss to St. Norbert College, the Grinnell College baseball bounced back – and then some.
 
The Pioneers scored 14 runs in the top of the 10th inning and tied a school record for runs in a game in a 22-8 blasting of Lawrence University to wrap up the Midwest Conference Crossover. Grinnell pounded out 19 hits in the game and had 19 RBIs to finish one shy of the school record.
 
Niko Takayesu '17 and Sam Galanek '18 had three hits each for Grinnell, with one of Galanek's a triple and both of Takayesu's doubles. Nathan Zaroban '18 also tripled, while Shane Comiskey '18 and Brad Weaver '18 each doubled.
 
Galanek hit an RBI triple to left-center in the first, but Lawrence countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. However, in the third, Matt Hammond '17 belted a three-run homer to center, Weaver lifted an RBI double, Julian Cabrera '19 had a sacrifice fly and Andrew Shults '19 pushed across a run on an error for a 7-3 lead.
 
Grinnell scored again in the fourth on Hammond's sacrifice fly for an 8-3 cushion. However, Lawrence forced extra innings with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
 
The Pioneers went to town in the 10th, with big hits including a two-run triple by Zaroban, two-run double by Comiskey, three-run double by Takayesu and a pair of RBI singles by Teague Towner '17 and another by Weaver.
 
Ben Binversie '17 pitched the final four innings to pick up the win.
 
Hammond had three hits in the loss to St. Norbert, while Galanek homered and Weaver doubled.
 
St. Norbert scored three runs in the first, but Grinnell got one back in the third on Hammond's RBI single. The Green Knights tallied one run in the bottom of the third, two in the fifth and three in the seventh for a 9-1 lead.
 
In the eighth, Shults had an RBI single and Galanek belted a grand slam homer.
 
Noah Mathews '17 was the pitcher of record for the Pioneers, who are 11-5 in the MWC and 17-12 overall.
 
Several Pioneers moved up on the program's single-season chart, including Shults jumping into a tie for the all-time lead in sacrifice hits with 10. Takayesu is second in runs scored with 41, third in walks with 28 and sixth in assists with 112. Hammond ranks second in RBIs with 49.
 
Grinnell plays three games in two days at the University of Chicago next weekend.
