Coach A. to be recognized Saturday as legendary coaching career draws to a close

GRINNELL, Iowa – David Arseneault Sr., who is closing a ground-breaking men's basketball coaching career at Grinnell College, will be recognized for his service and dedication Saturday.

A celebration and retirement reception is slated from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Harris Center Lobby, with special remarks presented by College President Raynard Kington and Director of Athletics and Recreation Andy Hamilton. The event is open to the public.

The Pioneer men's basketball team will host Illinois College at 3 p.m. Saturday in Darby Gymnasium. During halftime of the game, Arseneault will be recognized and approximately 50 alumni players in attendance will be introduced.

Arseneault will retire this summer after 29 years at Grinnell College. He is the winningest coach in school history with 343 victories, a figure that ranks fourth all-time in the Midwest Conference.

His internationally-acclaimed fast-paced "System" has sent the Pioneers to an all-out assault of the NCAA statistical record book in several offensive categories. Grinnell has led the nation in scoring and 3-pointers 20 of the past 24 seasons.

Arseneault has been MWC Coach of the Year three times and Division Coach of the Year twice.

His son David Jr., the Pioneer's interim head coach this year as Arseneault Sr. is on a college-granted sabbatical, will take over as head coach officially this summer.
