Pioneers rally to knock Lake Forest from ranks of the unbeaten

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Lake Forest College's basketball team entered Friday night's game unbeaten, but Grinnell College made sure the Foresters didn't leave that way.

Grinnell rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to snap a two-game losing streak at Lake Forest with a 108-100 Midwest Conference win. Grinnell is now 1-0 in the league and 4-2 overall, while Lake Forest fell to 0-1 in the MWC and 3-1 in all games.

Jackson Qualley '22 led Grinnell with 23 points, while Vinny Curta '19 added 20 points and eight assists as he moved up the program's all-time list. Curta now ranks sixth in career points with 1,803 and assists with 353, and is ninth in field goals with 568.

Ky-Sean Johnson '19 added 16 points, Will Bebee '22 grabbed six rebounds and Morgan Walser '21 and Griffin Boehm '19 had three steals each. Walser's was a career high.

Grinnell was down 36-25 in the first half before rallying to cut the gap to 47-46 on Johnson's layup with 1:45 left in the half. The Pioneers were down 51-50 at halftime and trailed by four early in the second half before going on a key run. Curta made a layup and Qualley another to tie the game at 59-all. Grinnell then took the lead on a jumper by Qualley and extended it to 64-59 on a trey by Derek Jones '22 with 13:44 left.

Although Grinnell never trailed again, Lake Forest kept it close and was down just 94-92 with 3:08 left. That's when Bebee converted a traditional three-point play and, after a free throw by Lake Forest, Johnson scored on a tip-in to put the Pioneers ahead 99-93 with 2:22 left.

Lake Forest never got closer than four the rest of the way as Grinnell secured the victory. Grinnell continues its road trip Saturday at Lawrence University. Tip-off in Appleton, Wis., is at 3 p.m.
