GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's basketball team dug itself a hole and couldn't quite get out as the Pioneers lost a 104-94 decision Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
Sean Cullinane '18 celebrated Senior Day with a game-high 22 points, going 7-of-11 from the 3-point line.
Ky-Sean Johnson '19 also scored 22 points and
Vinny Curta '19 tallied 16 to go along with a season-best eight assists and two steals.
Curta now has 731 points, good for fifth-best in a season at Grinnell.
Brad Geiman '21 added a career-high seven rebounds for the Pioneers (12-10, 7-9 Midwest Conference) and
Griffin Boehm '19 had six boards.
Grinnell was hurt by St. Norbert's rebounding prowess, as the Green Knights led the battle 62-27 with 20 offensive boards.
Grinnell shot out to a 6-2 lead as
Nathan Balcom '18 and
Gus King '18 each drained 3-pointers. But the Green Knights (17-6, 12-4 MWC) rallied with a 12-0 run for a 14-6 edge.
The Pioneers fell behind by as many as 15 points in the first half, but Grinnell rallied within four at 44-40 on Johnson's 3-pointer with 1:45 left.
St. Norbert went into the locker room with a 50-43 cushion before Grinnell came back to force a few ties, the final at 56-all on Curta's free throws.
But St. Norbert inched away after that and held on for the win.
Grinnell plays its final home game of the season Tuesday when Knox College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
