GRINNELL, Iowa – In an incredibly close contest between the Grinnell College Pioneers and the Illinois College Lady Blues, the Pioneer women's basketball team fell just short in a 68-67 setback.
In a hard-fought match that showcased the talents of both teams that were searching for a leg up in the Midwest Conference standings, the efforts of the Pioneers fell just short. As they are now 4-9 in MWC play, the team continued to show its teamwork and depth.
Headlined by
Kayla Morrissey '18 continuing to extend her national lead in free throws made by adding nine more to her tally, she added 17 points, six assists, and 11 rebounds for yet another double-double this season.
But it
Regan Kasprak '19 who truly put in a career performance, with 21 points and seven steals, both personal highs.
Tyria Heath '21 also had a strong effort, scoring 15 points and coming up with three steals.
Both players played key roles in an impressive showing of teamwork and defensive stops for the Pioneers. With a system built on passing and working to get their teammates open shots, the Pioneers posted 14 assists, the second highest of the season.
On the defensive side of the ball, with a variety of Pioneers coming in off the bench and working extremely hard to make it difficult for their opponents, the team also recorded 13 steals. Again, with the second highest total of the season, it's clear that the Pioneers are continuing to improve and play their best basketball later in the year.
Though this game didn't turn out as intended after Grinnell missed a possible buzzer-beater, the team's efforts and play continue to make every game difficult for their opponent. With plenty of season left to play, the Pioneers will likely get the chance to make an impact in the Midwest Conference field.
