GALESBURG, Ill. -
Kayla Morrissey '18 continued to attack various leader boards in the Grinnell College women's basketball team's 64-48 loss at Knox College Wednesday.
Morrissey sank five free throws in the game, putting her at 397 for her career to move into fifth all-time in the Midwest Conference. She also became Grinnell's all-time leader in career free throw attempts and is now at 514, moving ahead of Katy Bowen.
Morrissey had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Grinnell (7-12, 4-10 MWC) featured a balanced scoring attack, as
Hanna Kessel '19 tallied 11 points and
Regan Kasprak '19 scored 10. Kasprak also dished out a career-high seven assists.
Knox (15-6, 10-3 MWC) broke out to leads of 4-0 and 7-3 before Grinnell rallied to take the first of its three leads as Morrissey hit a jumper and 3-pointer for an 8-7 edge.
Grinnell later took an 11-10 lead on
Abby Hellweg's '19 free throw and 13-12 edge on a jumper by
Margaret Giles '18.
But Knox came back and was up 19-15 after the first frame. The Prairie Fire held the lead the entire second frame, though Grinnell came within 28-26 on Morrissey's free throw with 2:14 left.
Knox finished out the frame with a four-point run to lead 32-26 at intermission.
The Prairie Fire used a big third quarter to take command to stay, leading 53-30 at its end. They cruised from there for the win.
The Pioneers entertain St. Norbert College at 3 p.m. Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. Senior Day ceremonies are slated between the men's and women's contests.
