CONWAY, Ark. - Grinnell College's baseball team put up a good battle Saturday afternoon, but lost a pair of contests at Hendrix College.
The hosts won a 5-0 decision in the opener and rallied in the second game to earn a 5-3 victory.
Grinnell and Hendrix each had eight hits in the second game, with
Carson Gampell '20 leading Grinnell with a pair of singles.
The Pioneers snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when
Sam Galanek '18 reached base on an error and scored on Gampell's double to center.
Brad Weaver '18 followed with another two-bagger to center field to plate Gampell.
Hendrix tied the game with two runs in the fifth and scored twice more in the sixth. The Pioneers made a dent in that margin in the seventh when
Andrew Shults '19 reached on an infield single, moved to second on
Benjamin Wong's '18 walk and scored on Gampell's single to left-center.
Michael Slattery '18, the third of three Pioneer pitchers, was tagged with the loss.
Gampell and
Julian Cabrera '19 each had two hits in the second game, where the hosts scored one run in the second, three more in the third and another in the fifth.
Sam LaMotte '20 was issued the pitching loss.
Grinnell is now 0-4, while Hendrix improved to 6-11. The teams meet in another doubleheader Sunday.
