Grinnell baseball team knocks off Hendrix for first win of the season

CONWAY, Ark. - Brock Weirather '21 had a strong outing in his first collegiate start on the mound and Grinnell College pounded out 10 hits while getting its first win of the 2108 campaign, a 7-5 decision at Hendrix College Sunday afternoon.

Nathan Zaroban '18, Brad Weaver '18 and Chad Koehler '20 each had two hits in the contest for the Pioneers, who improved to 1-5 on the season after losing Sunday's opener 14-0.

Weaver and Koehler each had doubles among their totals. Weirather scattered 10 hits and gave up just two earned runs over five innings in earning the win. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk.

Jacob Morsch '20 worked the sixth inning on the mound and Shane Comiskey '18 tossed a scoreless seventh to get the save.

Grinnell scored in the first inning when Sam Galanek's '18 sacrifice fly to center field plated Andrew Shults '19, who had singled to left-center to start the frame.

The Pioneers pushed their lead to 3-0 in the second when Quinton McNitt '21 hit an RBI single to center and Koehler scored on a wild pitch.

Hendrix scored twice in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers stretched their lead to 5-2 with solo runs in the fourth and fifth frames. Galanek's bases-loaded walk pushed across a run in the fourth and Koehler belted a run-scoring double to left-center in the fifth.

Hendrix scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3, but the Pioneers tallied twice in the sixth when Weaver doubled to center field.

The hosts scored twice in the bottom of the sixth before Grinnell secured the win.

Hendrix, 7-12 on the season, scored three runs in the first inning of the opener and pulled away after that.

Grinnell managed three hits and Ryan Chang '21 suffered the loss.

The Pioneers continue to Florida from here for several more games, beginning Tuesday.
