ST. LOUIS – Grinnell College's baseball team opened its campaign Saturday with a 6-5 extra-inning loss to Illinois Wesleyan University.
The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits, including two each by
Andrew Shults '19,
Sam Galanek '18 and
Carson Gampell '20. Galanek hit Grinnell's first homer of the season and Shults and Gampell added doubles.
The Pioneers scored in the top of the first on Gampell's RBI double to left-center, but the Titans rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Grinnell tied it in the second with two runs on Shults' double to right. Illinois Wesleyan tallied in the fourth, but the Pioneers went up 5-4 in the top of the fifth when Galanek delivered a two-run homer down the left-field line.
However, the Titans tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and won it in the 10th.
Jay Goldsher '18, the last of five Grinnell pitchers, was tagged with the loss.
The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled. Grinnell was back in action Sunday and lost 16-0 to the University of Chicago.
The 0-2 Pioneers are slated to host the University of Wisconsin-Superior this Saturday and Sunday.
