GALESBURG, Ill. – Grinnell College's baseball team saw its rally fall short as Beloit College held on for a 7-6 win in the Midwest Conference Crossover Sunday.
The Pioneers tallied one run in the frame when
Michael Slattery's '18 groundout scored
Carson Gampell '20, but the Pioneers could get no more as they moved to 9-5 in the league and 12-15 overall.
Gampell had four hits on the day for the Pioneers and
Nathan Zaroban '18 doubled.
After Beloit scored in the first, Grinnell bounced back in the third when Gampell's two-run single scored
Andrew Shults '19 and
Quinton McNitt '21 and
Jared Booth '21 hit a three-run homer to score Gampell and
Sam Galanek '18 for a 5-1 lead.
However, the Buccaneers scored four runs in the sixth to tie the game and solo runs in the eighth and ninth.
Andrew Mack '18, who relieved the final 3-2/3 innings, was tagged with the pitching loss. He struck out four.
Galanek continued to move up Grinnell career categories and is now seventh in fielding chances with 583 and ninth in hits with 146.
Grinnell is off until Saturday when Knox College visits Pioneer Park for two games. The first pitch is at noon.
