GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing before a Senior Day crowd, the Grinnell College baseball team set a pair of school records in a twin bill against the University of Chicago Sunday.
Sam Galanek '18 took sole possession of the school's career sacrifice fly department by tallying his 15th and 16th, while
Andrew Shults '19 tied the record for stolen bases in a season with 26.
Grinnell and its opponent were close early in both games before the Maroons came away with wins of 5-4 and 19-9 at Pioneer Park.
In the opener, Grinnell pitchers
Daniel Lubelfeld '21,
Michael Slattery '18 and
Nate Lu '21 combined to toss a seven-hitter. Lubelfeld struck out three and Slattery two.
Nathan Zaroban '18 powered the offense with a pair of homers in his three-hit attack.
Riley Guieb '21 had two hits.
Chicago got out to a 4-0 lead before the Pioneers got two runs in the third when Shults came across the plate on an error and Zaroban homered to left-center. The teams traded runs in the sixth, with Grinnell's coming on Zaroban's solo shot to left.
The Pioneers closed within a run in the seventh on Galanek's sacrifice fly to left, but could not come any closer.
The Pioneers ripped off 10 hits in the second game, including two by Shults, Zaroban and
Noah Daniel '19. Daniel homered twice, the first two of his career, while
Jack Hager '20 belted the first homer of his career and Zaroban added his third round-tripper of the day.
The teams traded runs in the first, with Grinnell's being the result of Galanek's sacrifice fly to right. The teams again traded runs in the third as Daniel was responsible for Grinnell's with a homer to left. The Pioneers went up 4-2 in the fourth on Zaroban's homer to left and Guieb' s sacrifice fly.
However, Chicago went ahead to stay with five runs in the fifth. Grinnell scored one on Zaroban's double to left in the bottom of the fifth, but the Maroons came up with a 10-spot in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Hager homered to left-center and Daniel to left to make it 17-7.
Each team scored twice in the seventh, with Grinnell scoring on Wong's RBI groundout and when
Zack Jones '21 came across on a wild pitch.
Grinnell is now 16-19, while Chicago improved to 26-10. Besides the sacrifice fly mark, Galanek also made movement on Grinnell's career chart for hits (fifth with 157), total bases (fifth with 229), games played (sixth with 131) and doubles (10th with 26). Shults moved up to fourth in career stolen bases with 43.
On the season all-time list, Shults is second in both runs scored with 41 and times hit by pitch with 10. Galanek is third in RBIs with 47, seventh in doubles with 12, eighth in sacrifice flies with four and ninth in at bats with 139. Zaroban is seventh in doubles with 12 and 10th in runs scored with 37, while
Carson Gampell '20 is eighth in putouts with 246.
