MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's track and field team got its 2019 campaign off to a successful start Saturday at the Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.
 
The Pioneers had a trio of wins on the day, those coming from Declan O'Reilly '21 in the 800-meter run (2:05.68), Erik Henderson '19 in the high jump (5-8 ¾) and Chris Brunet '19 in the 400 (1:03.77).
 
Grinnell got runner-up individual finishes from Tommy Jacobs '22 in the triple jump (38-1 ¼) and Sean O'Reilly '19 in the 800 (2:06.10). The Pioneers were also second in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Andrew Shults '19, Jacobs, Zeke Taylor '21 and Zack Willis '22 ran the 4x400 in 3:42.01, while Papa Kojo Ampim-Darko '19, Henderson, Jacobs and Taylor completed the 4x200 in 1:38.20.
 
Ampim-Darko was third in the 200 in 24.17, the same placing as Willis in the 800. He ran 2:06.58. Shults placed fifth in the 60 with a time of 7.44.
 
The Pioneers host the annual Grinnell Invitational next Saturday.
