TOPEKA, Kan. - History repeated itself for the Grinnell College baseball team Sunday, as for the second day in a row the Pioneers bounced back from a tough opening-game loss with a big offensive effort in the nightcap to earn the split.
After losing 11-1 to Buena Vista University in Sunday's opener, the Pioneers exploded for double-digit runs in a 14-10 win over the Beavers to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Grinnell scored all 14 of its runs on seven hits. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Pioneers got a run back in the second on
Noah Daniel''s '19 RBI double.
The Beavers went up 3-1 before Grinnell took the lead for good with an eight-run outburst in the fifth.
Julian Cabrera '19 began the charge with an RBI single and
Jared Booth '21 added a run-scoring single to tie it. An error allowed two more runs to score,
Matthew Inaba '22 walked with the bases loaded, Daniel crossed the plate on a wild pitch and
Riley Guieb '21 delivered a two-run single to put Grinnell ahead 9-3.
The Beavers climbed within 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth, but Grinnell got some insurance with five runs in the seventh. Inaba reached base on a fielder's choice scoring two runs, Cabrera lifted a two-run single and Booth hit a sacrifice fly.
Cabrera led Grinnell's balanced offensive attack with two hits and
Sam LaMotte '20 was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits in four innings while striking out five.
Charles Carr '19 closed out the win with three innings on the mound and struck out three.
Buena Vista used a six-run fourth inning to pull away in the second game. Grinnell's run came in the seventh on
Vince Reilly's '19 RBI double to right field.
Ryan Chang '21 suffered the pitching loss.
Grinnell plays Hendrix College three times next weekend in Conway, Ark.
