TUCSON, Ariz. – A fast start translated to a big victory for the Grinnell College baseball team in its first game on its trip to Arizona Tuesday.
The Pioneers scored nine runs in the first three innings on their way to knocking off Wesleyan University of Connecticut by a 10-4 score. Grinnell pounded out 11 hits, including two-hit performances by
Riley Guieb '21,
Matthew Inaba '22 and
Quinton McNitt '21. Guieb had a triple among his totals, while Inaba,
Carson Gampell '20,
Julian Cabrera '19 and
Noah Daniel '19 all doubled.
Four Pioneers combined on the mound, with
Ryan Chang '21 getting the win. He worked 3-1/3 innings in his start, striking out two batters.
Grinnell spotted Wesleyan two runs in the top of the first inning, but came back with three in the bottom half as Cabrera belted a two-run single and
Jared Booth '21 pushed across a run on a groundout.
Grinnell upped its lead to 7-2 in the second inning as Daniel scored on an error, Inaba hit a sacrifice fly to left, McNitt sent a single for an RBI and Cabrera had a two-run double.
The Pioneers made it 9-2 in the third on an RBI double by Inaba and run-scoring single from McNitt. Grinnell completed its scoring in the fifth on an Inaba RBI single.
Wesleyan bounced back to win the nightcap 9-4 after jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Grinnell got all its runs in the seventh inning as McNitt hit an RBI single and Gampell belted a three-run homer. The Pioneers managed eight hits, including two each from McNitt and Gampell. Gampell and Cabrera each had doubles among their totals.
Charles Carr '19 was the pitcher of record for the Pioneers, who are 3-6. During the games, Gampell moved up to sixth on the Pioneers' career putouts list with 532 and is now ninth in fielding chances with 557.
Grinnell is back in action Wednesday against Augsburg College.
