Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – With its back to the wall, Grinnell College's baseball team responded in impressive fashion Saturday.
The Pioneers erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past Macalester College by a 6-4 score in the opener of a doubleheader.
Grinnell had four hits in the inning, including
Vince Reilly's '19 leadoff single to center. That was followed by a two-run homer by
Noah Daniel '19 down the left-field line, tying the game at 4-all.
Brady LeSher '19 then walked and, after the next two Pioneers failed to reach base, pinch runner
Joe Dudley '20 advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when
Quinton McNitt '21 sent an RBI single to left-center.
Julian Cabrera '19 then belted a run-scoring double to left-center, making it 6-4.
Gabriel Shubert '20 tossed hitless ball in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win. Shubert, who pitched two innings, was credited with the victory to finish off a fine starting effort by
Brock Weirather '21. Weirather fanned three batters in five innings and Shubert struck out two.
McNitt sparked the offense with three hits, while
Kory Czajkowski '21 added two. Grinnell's other two runs came in the top of the first when Czajkowski doubled to left, moved to third on
Matthew Inaba's '22 sacrifice bunt and scored on McNitt's groundout to short. After Cabrera walked,
Jack Hager '20 blasted an RBI triple to left-center.
Macalester scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to grab a 4-2 lead and set up Grinnell's big finish.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Scots came away with a 7-0 win. Grinnell's hit came from Hager and
Jacob Morsch '21 suffered the pitching loss.
Grinnell, 5-9 on the season, meets Oberlin College in a doubleheader Sunday. Macalester is now 5-5.
