Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – Timely hitting and an impressive pitching performance delivered the Grinnell College baseball team to a 7-2 win over Oberlin College in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Sam LaMotte '20 tossed a complete-game nine-hitter, giving up just two earned runs and striking out five without issuing a walk.
Jack Hager '20 had three hits, while
Kory Czajkowski '20 and
Vince Reilly '19 had two apiece.
Oberlin scored a run in the first, but the Pioneers came back to tie it in the second when
Will Richman '22 sent an RBI single to left field. Grinnell went up 2-1 in the third as
Julian Cabrera '19 pushed across a run on a groundout to second.
Oberlin tied it in the top of the fourth, but after that it was all Grinnell with a four-run output in the bottom of the inning. Czajkowski began things with an RBI single to left-center,
Matthew Inaba '22 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Cabrera followed with a two-run single through the left side. Grinnell completed the scoring in the fifth on Inaba's sacrifice fly to left.
The Pioneers outhit Oberlin 12-11 in the second game, but lost a 13-5 decision. Reilly had a big game at the plate with three hits, while Czajkowski, Inaba and
Cooper King '21 had two hits.
The Pioneers scored twice in the top of the first on King's two-run single through the left side. However, Oberlin put up eight runs in the first three innings for an 8-2 edge. Grinnell got a run back in the fifth when
Jared Booth '21 bashed a solo homer to right-center.
Oberlin got five runs in the bottom of the inning before Grinnell closed out the scoring in the seventh on King's RBI groundout to second and a one-run single to left by Czajkowski.
Ryan Chang '21, Grinnell's starter, suffered the loss. Grinnell is now 6-10, while Oberlin moved to 5-5.
Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play next Saturday with two games at Cornell College. The Pioneers have their first home games the following day when the Rams visit.
