Late rally lifts Pioneer baseball team to victory over Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - After two tough losses Saturday to Illinois College and facing a deficit in the eighth inning of Sunday's opener against the Blueboys, the Grinnell College baseball team turned things around in a hurry as it put on a display of grit and ferocity that resulted in a 4-3 win.

Among the other highlights on the day occurred when Quinton McNitt '21 set the school career record for being hit by a pitch with 23, passing both Chad Takabuki and Ryan Penaflor in that category.

The Pioneers scored one run in the eighth inning of the first game and two more in the ninth to secure the win. Brock Weirather '21 complemented the comeback with a complete-game pitching performance, scattering nine hits and striking out four while moving to 2-0 on the season.

In the eighth inning, a wild pitch allowed Jack Hager '20 to score and reduce the Pioneers' deficit to 3-2. Then, in the ninth with two out, McNitt sent a double to left field and Riley Guieb '21 walked before Hager bashed a two-run double to left field.

Grinnell managed five hits in the game. Besides the doubles by McNitt and Hager, Julian Cabrera '19, LeSher and Noah Daniel '19 all singled.

Illinois College came back to win the second game 11-5 as Hager tripled for Grinnell, Daniel hit a double and single and Cabrera doubled. Daniel's RBI single to center in the top of the first put the Pioneers up top. The Blueboys rallied to take a 4-1 lead before Matthew Inaba '22 drew a bases-loaded walk in the third and another run came across on an error. Daniel followed with an RBI double to left-center in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-all.

Illinois College (6-6 Midwest Conference, 17-15 overall) responded with two runs before Grinnell (6-6 MWC, 12-18) closed the gap to one in the sixth when Cabrera lifted an RBI double to left field. The Blueboys then went on a key four-run spurt in the sixth inning and never looked back.

Grinnell closes out the regular season Saturday when Monmouth College visits for Senior Day. The first pitch is slated for noon.
