LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Grinnell College's football team fell behind 14-0 through one quarter and couldn't quite rebound as Lake Forest College posted a 44-0 win Saturday afternoon.
Matt Siff '22 and
Avery Hootstein '23 shared quarterbacking duties for Grinnell, with Siff completing nine passes for 74 yards and Hootstein six passes for 31.
Max Hill '20 caught five passes for 41 yards and
Dustin Saia '22 had five snags for 23 yards.
Daniel Carter '22 added three catches and 33 yards.
Jelani McCray '21 had a huge game defensively, making a team-leading six tackles – all solos.
Anthony Johnson '22 also had six stops,
Scott Nissen '23 and
Luke Howard '23 had five each and
Sal Kargbo '22 and
Lucas Bukowski '23 three apiece.
Grinnell put together a solid drive in the first period, going 52 yards in 12 plays before it was stopped on Lake Forest's 29-yard line as Siff's pass to Hill left the visitors just short of the first down.
Lake Forest tacked on 24 points in the second period for a 38-0 halftime lead. Grinnell's defense clamped down in the second half, limiting the Foresters to no points in the third period and six in the fourth.
Grinnell came close to the red zone in the fourth period, driving to the Foresters' 22-yard line on Hootstein's 5-yard pass to Saia. A penalty moved the ball back 5 yards and Grinnell had a 2-yard rush and three pass incompletions after that to turn it over.
Grinnell is now 0-2, while the Foresters moved to 2-0. The Pioneers have a bye next Saturday before entertaining Macalester College on Sept. 28. Kickoff at Rosenbloom Field is 1 p.m.
