Lowrey rolls up near-record ace total as Pioneers sail past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College started Midwest Conference volleyball action on a dominating note Saturday afternoon and Payton Lowrey '22 nearly tied a school record as the Pioneers rolled by Lawrence University 25-17, 25-16 and 25-13.

Lowrey served nine aces on the day, one shy of the school record held by Amber Donahue and tying the mark for aces in a three-set match. The win extends the Pioneers' victory streak to five matches as they improved to 15-2, the seventh-most wins in program history. Lawrence dipped to 4-14.

Grinnell hit a blistering .329 for the match, with Kaylin Kuhn '21 coming up with 13 kills and Rachel Woock '23 adding 10 while hitting .600. Julianna Roth '22 added 27 assists and served two aces, while Lowrey contributed 10 digs.

Kuhn now has 985 career kills, which ranks seventh all-time at Grinnell.

The first set was close before a four-point run by Grinnell, which included kills by Kuhn and Woock, put the Pioneers up 12-8. They never looked back after that.

The Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the second set, but then it was Lowrey's turn. After the Pioneers got a sideout via Woock's kill, Lowrey served 11 consecutive points that included four aces to put the Pioneers up 12-3. They cruised to victory from there.

Lowrey was at it again in the third set, serving the first four points including two aces. After a Lawrence sideout, Roth served six points in a row to put the Pioneers up 11-1. They continued from there to secure the sweep.

Grinnell continues league play next weekend, hosting Lake Forest College at 7 p.m. Friday and Beloit College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
