Grinnell volleyball team off to best start in program history after sweep of Faith Baptist

GRINNELL, Iowa - Volleyball at Grinnell College has been going strong since the 1970s, but Tuesday night the Pioneers enjoyed something for the first time in program history.

Grinnell opened a season with five victories for the first time in 46 years with a three-set sweep of Faith Baptist Bible College at Darby Gymnasium. The Pioneers, who were able to get several players significant playing time, won by scores of 25-6, 25-12 and 25-9.

Grinnell hit .309 as a team and served up 15 aces, the third-highest total ever for a three-set match at Grinnell.

Rachel Woock '23 hit a whopping .600 with nine kills in 15 tries with no errors. Sophia Carbajal '21 added eight kills and Sophie Smith '23 added six. Julianna Roth had four assists and Emmy Nyquist '23 served five aces while Alissa Johnson '20 added three. Nyquist also had 12 digs and Madison Smith '20 added 10.

Grinnell shot out to a quick lead in the opening set on the serve of Roth, going up 3-0. Later, Grinnell was up 7-3 before breaking things open with a 13-1 run. Sophie Smith '23 served the final eight of those points as Grinnell went on to win with ease.

It was more of the same in the second set, as Nyquist served six straight points as the Pioneers opened up a 9-1 lead. Faith Baptist rallied with nine consecutive points, but Grinnell rebounded with a 16-2 run to finish off the match. Madison Smith served seven of those points and Julia Welch '22 added six.

The Eagles got out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, but again Grinnell rallied and eventually took an 8-7 lead on Nyquist's ace serve. That was part of a seven-point service run by Nyquist, and Sophie Smith followed with a nine-point run as Grinnell won with ease. With the loss, Faith Baptist dropped to 0-5.

Grinnell hosts Luther College, Cornell College and Carleton College for the ACM Tournament this weekend.
