GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's soccer team put together perhaps its finest game of the season on both ends of the pitch Sunday afternoon, taking nationally-ranked St. Olaf College to the limit.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation before the 17
th-ranked Oles scored a minute-into-a-half in the extra period to eke out a 1-0 victory.
After turning away a few St. Olaf (13-1-1) attacks in the early minutes, Grinnell played on even terms with the Oles the rest of the way in the physical battle. On a few different occasions in the second half, Grinnell (7-7) had chances to score but big saves by the Ole goal keeper kept the contest scoreless.
St. Olaf outshot Grinnell 15-11, but only had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Carter Benson '24 had five saves as Grinnell's keeper, the same made by St. Olaf.
Jasper Yang '22 and
Peter Murphy '25 each had three of Grinnell's shots, with all three of Murphy's on goal and one of Yang's being so.
Zeke Miller '22 also had a shot on goal.
Others with shots for the Pioneers were
Noah Guyton '23,
Oliver Northing '25,
Ray Goedeker '22 and
Caleb Hoereth '24.
Grinnell has some time off before entertaining Ripon College next Saturday at Springer Field. Action begins at 1:30 p.m.
