Grinnell keeps postseason hopes alive with shutout of Red Hawks

GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing its final home conference match of the 2021 campaign, Grinnell College's men's soccer team made the most of the opportunity.

Jasper Yang '22 tied the school record for assists in a match with four as the Pioneers rolled past Ripon College 6-0 at Springer Field.

The win was critical in keeping the Pioneers' postseason hopes alive as they improved to 5-2 in the Midwest Conference and 8-7 in all games. Ripon fell to 1-6 in the MWC and 4-12-1 overall.

Yang's assist total matched that by Joey Brown in a Sept. 21, 2014, contest against Buena Vista University.

Grinnell spread the wealth with its offense, as six different players scored the team's goals. Dylan Maddux '25 opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he sent a ball over the keeper's head and into the net off of Yang's assist. It was the second goal of the season by Maddux.

Yang scored his league-leading 18th goal of the season in the 39th minute on an assist by Matias Bambi '23, making it 2-0 at intermission.

Davis Provost '23 scored his first goal of the season from close range in the 50th minute on Yang's assist, and Oliver Northing '25 found the back of the net two minutes later on Zak Serby's '25 assist. It was the sixth goal of the year for Northing.

Noah Guyton '23 got his first goal of the year in the 68th minute, again on Yang's assist, and Yang also assisted the team's final goal, a shot by Ray Goedeker '22 in the 85th minute. It was the second goal of the year by Goedeker.

Grinnell had a season-high 28 shots in the game, with Yang having five, Maddux and Guyton four each and Provost three.

Yang moved up to second all-time at Grinnell for career points with 107 and is tied for second in goals with 46. He also claimed the No. 8 spot for assists with 15. The Pioneers had six assists as a team, tied for fourth in program history.

Grinnell's Carter Benson '24 played a majority of the game at keeper and had the team's two saves.

Grinnell plays at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Sunday, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
