Grinnell volleyball team comes up just shy in thrilling battle with Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - In an atmosphere befitting a battle for the Midwest Conference regular-season championship, Grinnell College and Cornell College didn't disappoint.

In the end, Cornell eked out a four-set victory in perhaps the largest crowd to witness a volleyball match in Darby Gymnasium. Set scores, in favor of the Rams, were 25-12, 26-24, 18-25 and 25-22.

The win not only gave the Rams the regular-season MWC title, but also hosting rights for next weekend's conference tournament. Grinnell had already qualified for the tournament and will go in as the second seed.

After Cornell (7-0 MWC, 16-11 overall) won the first set, Grinnell gave the Rams a back-and-forth battle in the second. The Pioneers used a four-point run early to build a 5-2 cushion. Anna Killin '23 was big during the spurt, combining on two blocks with Kaylin Kuhn '22 and also tallying two kills.

After that it was tight the rest of the way. Down 24-22, Grinnell stayed alive as a Ram attack error and kill by Rachel Woock '23 tied the set. However, the Rams scored two in a row to win.

The Pioneers trailed 11-9 in the third set, but then came to life with a 6-0 run. Jensen, Emily Brewer '24 and Kuhn each had kills to push the Pioneers ahead by a point. After an attack error by Cornell, Julianna Vajda '24 served an ace and Kuhn added a kill to make it 15-9.

Grinnell (6-1 MWC, 17-13) never looked back, and Vajda appropriately finished it off with an ace for the seven-point win.

Grinnell built an 18-16 lead in the fourth set, but the Rams came up with a key five-point run to go ahead 21-18. Consecutive attack errors by the visitors brought Grinnell within a point, but the Rams answered with two points.

The Pioneers got as close as two twice after that before Cornell finished off the victory.

Kuhn had 15 kills for Grinnell and Killin had 10 while hitting .500. Brewer and Julianna Roth '22 had 22 and 14 assists, respectively, and Vajda served two aces.

Kuhn also had three blocks and 11 digs. Payton Lowrey '23 came up with 13 digs and Woock 11. Lowrey now has 445 digs, the seventh-most in program history, while Kuhn's kills total of 402 ranks ninth.

As a team the Pioneers have 1,242 assists this year which is seventh-most in program history. The Pioneers' 1,371 kills rank eighth.

Grinnell closes out the regular season at home Saturday with an 11 a.m. Senior Day match against Lake Forest College and 1 p.m. test against Luther College.
