Pioneers strike first, but University of Chicago pulls away for football win

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College held its own against once-beaten University of Chicago in the opening quarter, but the Maroons took control after that to post a 78-3 win Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.

Grinnell (2-6, 2-5 Midwest Conference) took the opening kickoff and promptly marched downfield, putting together a 16-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a 26-yard field goal by Nick Rhinehart '25.

A number of big pass completions from Grayson Woodhouse '24 to Dustin Saia '22 sparked the drive, with one pass being for 17 yards and a pair for 12 each. Danny Carter '22 threw in a healthy dose of rushes to keep the Maroons honest.

Things looked even better for Grinnell after Chicago had driven deep into its territory. On a first-down play, Charlie Henehan '24 forced a fumble at the Pioneer 13-yard line and Jio Hong '25 jumped on it to give possession back to Grinnell.

The teams traded drives after that, with Chicago's ending in a field goal to tie the game at 3-all.

Chicago (7-1, 6-1 MWC) erupted for 40 points in the second period for a 43-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

Carter led Grinnell's rushing attack with 57 yards, while Woodhouse completed seven passes for 62 yards. Saia had five snags for 51 yards.

Blady Cavazos '25 led the defense with seven tackles. Tim Johnson '24 and Hugh Werner '25 added six stops apiece.

Grinnell plays its final road game of the season next Saturday at Illinois College.
