Grinnell men's soccer team punches ticket to Midwest Conference Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team celebrated its first Midwest Conference Tournament berth since 2017 Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Lake Forest College.

Grinnell improved to 6-2 in the league and earned the third seed for the event. The Pioneers, 11-7 overall, take on second-seeded Cornell College at 2 p.m. next Friday in Galesburg, Ill.

Saturday's win also saw Jasper Yang '22 set a school record for points in a season with 54, passing the 1963 mark of 52 by the legendary Vince Anku.

Yang had two goals, pushing his season total to an NCAA-high 24. He helped Grinnell gain a 2-0 halftime lead with goals in the 36th and 44th minutes, the first being assisted by Caleb Hoereth '24.

Lake Forest, 4-4 in the league and 4-13-1 overall, cut the gap to 2-1 in the 75th minute before Matias Bambi '25 gave Grinnell some insurance with a score in the 89th minute on Oliver Northing's '25 assist.

Carter Benson '24 worked the entire game in goal for Grinnell, making one save.

The Pioneers more than doubled the shots total of the hosts, winning that battle 15-6. Davis Provost '23 had four shots, Yang and Noah Guyton '23 three each and Bambi a pair.
