Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell women make history with first program's first win over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Grinnell College may have entered Tuesday's women's basketball game at Buena Vista University having never won a game in the series.

But the Pioneers made sure they didn't leave Storm Lake that way, posting a 64-57 non-conference victory over the Beavers. It marked Grinnell's first win against Buena Vista in eight tries of a series dating back to 1987.

Grinnell (3-3) led virtually the entire game and held off a late Buena Vista charge to snap a three-game losing streak.

Erin Lillis '24 continued her impressive start to the season, scoring a game-high 22 points. Sofia Ahooja '22 added 16 points, Nicole Ware '25 scored 11 and Eva Carchidi '24 had a career-high nine.

Payton Hall '25 grabbed 15 rebounds, the most for a Pioneer this season and tops for the program since Ellie Gubbrud '22 twice accomplished that feat in January of 2020.

Hall, Lillis, Ahooja and Ware all had two steals, Hall also blocked two shots and Lillis added one assist.

Grinnell trailed just a few times early, the last at 7-5 after a 3-pointer by Buena Vista (2-2) midway through the first period. The Pioneers countered with a five-point run as Ware drained a 3-pointer and Lillis a jumper on their way to a 17-13 lead by the end of the frame.

The Pioneers upped their cushion to 37-28 by halftime and were up 53-46 after three periods.

Grinnell was still comfortably ahead early in the fourth period before the hosts made one last run, coming within 57-55 at the 2:44 mark. Ware followed with a critical 3-pointer with 2:21 left and added two free throws with 45 seconds left to push the visitors ahead 62-55. Ahooja helped ice the victory with two free throws after that.

Grinnell is back in action Wednesday night when Iowa Wesleyan University visits Darby Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. test.
