Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Grinnell women use amazing comeback from double-digit deficit to halt 6-game losing skid against Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team may have been down, but certainly not out.

The Pioneers used an incredible rally, and equally thrilling finish, to knock off Knox College 58-57 in Midwest Conference play Tuesday night.

The win snapped Grinnell's six-game losing streak to Knox, dating back to the 2017-18 season.

Grinnell dug itself into an 11-0 hole to start the game and trailed by 12 midway through the third quarter before using a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes to take the lead.

It was back and forth the rest of the way before the Pioneers secured the victory.

With Grinnell (4-5, 1-1 MWC) trailing by a point, Erin Lillis '24 showed the ice water in her veins by stepping up and hitting a pull-up 17-foot jumper with 38 seconds left to make it a 54-53 lead.

After Knox (2-4, 0-1 MWC) hit two free throws to retake the lead, Lillis was fouled with :27 remaining and sank both shots for a 56-55 Pioneer cushion. After Knox missed a shot, Nicole Ware '25 was fouled with :15 left and calmly made both charity tosses to push Grinnell up by three.

Knox had a final attempt at a 3-pointer, missed, and put in a meaningless layup as time expired to secure the Grinnell win.

Lillis tied for game-high scoring honors with 15 points, while Ware and Payton Hall '25 each had nine. Hall's total was a career-high.

Lillis and Annabel Dougherty '25 each had six boards, with the latter's being a career-best. Sofia Ahooja' 22 dished out four assists, Ware came up with four steals and Aidan Coalson '22 had a block. Coalson now ranks 15th in program history with 34 career blocks.

After digging the 11-point hole early, Grinnell rallied to make it 15-11 by the end of the first period. The Pioneers continued to roll, eventually taking a 22-21 lead on Grace Marsh's '25 free throw with 1:45 remaining in the first half before Knox rebounded for a 27-22 cushion at intermission.

The Prairie Fire kept it up, building a 36-24 lead in the third period. That's when the visitors clamped down, beginning with a layup by Dougherty and jumper by Ahooja to make it an eight-point game.

Knox followed with a pair of free throws, but Ware drained a 3-pointer and Sarah Toay '23 followed with a layup to bring Grinnell within five at 38-33.

Aiyana Rockwell '24 added a trey with 1:33 to go in the half and Lillis a pair of free throws with two ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 38-all entering the final period. During Grinnell's big run, the Pioneers forced five consecutive missed shots by Knox as well as three turnovers.

Ahooja opened the fourth period with a layup to complete the big run and set up the exciting final stretch.

The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Saturday to take on Lawrence University. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
