Grinnell women dispose of Lawrence to stretch home streak against Vikings to 13 games

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team has had its way with Lawrence University the last decade-and-a-half, and that trend continued Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers stretched their home winning streak against the Vikings to 13 games, and beat Lawrence for the 21st time in the last 23 meetings overall with a 72-61 decision. The last time Grinnell lost to Lawrence in Darby Gymnasium was 2006.

The win gave Grinnell a 2-1 record in the Midwest Conference play for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign while evening its overall record at 5-5. Lawrence fell to 1-1 in the league and 3-4 in all games.

Nicole Ware '25 scored a career-best 21 points for Grinnell, making 5-of-5 3-point shots in the process to tie a school record, while Erin Lillis '24 added 13 points. Payton Hall '25 grabbed 11 rebounds, Sofia Ahooja '22 dished out a career-high nine assists and Lillis and Ware each had three steals.

Aidan Coalson '22, Aiyanna Rockwell '24 and Sara Booher '25 all had one block. Coalson's career total is now 35, tied for 14th all-time at Grinnell.

The game was tied 13-all after one period and the Pioneers clung to a two-point lead late in the second period before closing with a critical 13-point run aided by multiple players.

Ware began the spurt with a pair of free throws before Sophie Delaney '25 drained a 3-pointer to push Grinnell ahead 35-28 with 2:28 remaining. Lillis followed with a layup, Grace Marsh '25 contributed a 3-pointer and Delaney put in a trey right before the buzzer to give Grinnell a 43-28 halftime lead. Lawrence turned the ball over twice in the critical stretch and missed four consecutive shots.

The Pioneers continued to pour it on in the third period, holding an 18-15 scoring edge to take a 61-43 lead into the final quarter.

Grinnell returns to Darby Gymnasium Wednesday to entertain Cornell College in a 7:30 p.m. affair.
