Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's basketball team saw a big difference in the boards and a tough shooting night lead to an 81-66 setback to Cornell College at Darby Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Cornell (5-3, 2-1 Midwest Conference) had a 50-27 edge in rebounding, including 18 boards on the offensive end. The Rams also shot 51.7 percent from the field compared to Grinnell's 37.3 percent clip.
Erin Lillis '24 and
Nicole Ware '25 provided a stellar 1-2 scoring punch for Grinnell (5-6, 2-2 MWC) with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Ware also had three assists and
Payton Hall '25 contributed nine boards and one block.
Aiyana Rockwell '24 dished out a career-high three assists.
Grinnell fell behind by nine in the first period before coming back within 18-15 at the buzzer on
Sofia Ahooja's '22 3-pointer. The second period saw the teams go back and forth, with Grinnell's final lead being 36-35 on a 3-pointer by
Aidan Coalson '22 with 47 seconds left. However, the Rams got two quick buckets for a 39-39 halftime lead.
The Pioneers fell behind by nine in the third period, but made a furious rally as Hall sank a jumper and Ahooja a pair of free throws to make it a five-point game. After a Cornell basket, Lillis drained a jumper and trey to reduce the Rams' lead to 49-47.
However, Cornell finished the period with a 7-0 run to take a 56-47 edge into the final stanza. The visitors gradually pulled away in the fourth period to secure the win.
Grinnell is off until Jan. 4 when it plays at Ripon College
