Pioneer baseball team uses dominating pitching to win 6th game in a row and stay in MWC South Division title hunt

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - A pair of masterful pitching performances by seniors, as well as some timely offense, helped the Grinnell College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Cornell College Thursday.

The wins, 10-6 in the opener and 15-4 in eight innings in the second game, pushed Grinnell's winning streak to six games. That is the longest string since the 2017 campaign as the Pioneers remained in the Midwest Conference South Division title conversation with a 12-8 mark both in the league and overall.

Ryan Chang '21 tossed the first complete game of his collegiate career in the nightcap, an eight-inning, two-strikeout performance.

Ryan Moeller '21 earned the first pitching win of his collegiate career in the opener with a four-hit, five-strikeout performance over six innings. Sean Richardson '23 paced the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Jared Booth '21 and Brock Weirather '21 added two hits each. Booth also knocked in four runs.

Grinnell jumped on top in the opening inning and never looked back, grabbing an 8-0 cushion by the sixth frame. Weirather had an RBI single in the first and Richardson knocked in a run when he reached on an error in the second.

Richardson added a two-run single in the fourth for a 4-0 lead, and Zeke Taylor '21 bashed a solo homer in the sixth to make it 5-0. Booth added a three-run homer to left-center the same inning to push the Pioneers up by eight.

Cornell gradually rallied and came within 8-5, but the Pioneers scored twice in the eighth on Richardson's RBI single and Booth's run-scoring double down the left-field line. The Rams scored once in the ninth before pitcher Seth Bartusek '21 shut the door.

Quinton McNitt '21 was hit by two pitches in the game, boosting his program career lead to 30.

Booth had four hits and three RBIs in the nightcap, while Weirather added three hits and knocked in three runs. Evan Borberg '24 put down two sacrifice bunts, the fourth-highest total in program history, and Grinnell's 10 walks are tied for eighth-best.

Weirather had an RBI single in the first inning and Booth scored on an error in the third to put Grinnell on top 2-0. After Cornell tied it in the bottom of the third, the teams traded runs in the fifth with Grinnell's coming across when Luke Porter '23 got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Grinnell took the lead for good in the sixth when Lucas Hadding '23 scored on a wild pitch and Richardson hit an RBI single to the pitcher.

The Pioneers broke things open with their 10-run eighth inning. Taylor scored on a passed ball and McNitt came across on an error to make it 7-3. Booth followed with an RBI single, Weirather belted a two-run homer to left and Borberg added an RBI single to left to put Grinnell on top 11-3.

Matthew Inaba '22 kept it going when he scored on a wild pitch, Richardson walked with the bases loaded and Booth plated two runs with a single to center. Cornell managed to get one run in the bottom of the inning before Chang finished off the win.

The teams meet for the final time this season Saturday when Cornell, 11-11 in the MWC South and 14-22 overall, visits Pioneer Park. The 11 a.m. twin bill will also be Senior Day for Grinnell.
