Grinnell baseball team uses timely rally to earn split with Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Just when it looked as if the Grinnell College baseball team would lose its fourth game in a row to Monmouth College, the Pioneers bounced back in impressive style.

Grinnell rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth inning and added two for good measure in the 10th to win the second game of Sunday afternoon's twin bill 9-7.

The Pioneers, who are 6-6 overall and in the Midwest Conference South Division, pounded out 12 hits in the game including two-hit performances by Sean Richardson '23, Jared Booth '21 and Luke Porter '23.

Grinnell fell into a 5-0 hold through the third inning, but gradually crept back. Zeke Taylor '21 had an RBI single down the left-field line in the fourth, an error plated a run in the fifth and Richardson hit an RBI double to right-center in the seventh followed by a Porter RBI single to shortstop to bring Grinnell within 5-4.

Monmouth, 14-9 overall and 12-7 in the MWC South, answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh. In the ninth, Nate L'esperance '23 belted a three-run double to left-center to push the Pioneers ahead 7-6. Monmouth tied it in the bottom of the ninth, but the Pioneers were not fazed as Jonathan Gottlieb '22 bashed a solo homer to center in the 10th and Lucas Hadding '23 added an RBI single to right.

Grinnell pitcher Daniel Lubelfeld '21 shut the door on the Fighting Scots in the 10th, completing a 1-2/3 inning outing of hitless ball while striking out three.

The Pioneers lost the opener 5-0 despite being outhit only 8-7. Richardson and Porter each had two hits for Grinnell and Brock Weirather '21 was the pitcher of record.

Grinnell is back in action Wednesday for a solo game at Cornell College. The first pitch is 7 p.m.
