Grinnell puts together solid performance to sweep MWC South-leading Blueboys in doubleheader

GRINNELL, Iowa - Taking advantage of some beautiful baseball weather, Grinnell College put together one of its best doubleheader performances of the season Sunday afternoon against Illinois College.

The Pioneers won their second and third games in a row against the Midwest Conference South Division leaders at Pioneer Park, grabbing the opener 7-4 and the second game 8-7.

The sweep keeps the MWC South title race a four-team affair, a mix that includes the Pioneers who are 9-8 both in the division and overall. Illinois College fell to 15-8 in the MWC South and 18-17 in all games.

Brock Weirather '21 did it all for Grinnell in the opener. He not only had three of the Pioneers' 14 hits, but tossed eight innings of six-hit, eight-strikeout ball to collect the pitching win. Ryan Chang '21 threw a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

Illinois College built a 2-0 lead before the Pioneers scored seven unanswered runs. Luke Porter '23 got Grinnell on the board when he had an RBI on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning. Sean Richardson '23 and Zeke Taylor '21 had RBI singles to center in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to push Grinnell ahead 3-2.

Evan Borberg '24 delivered the fatal blow to the Blueboys in the sixth, belting a three-run single to right-center. Weirather added a homer to center for good measure to make it 7-2.

The Blueboys scored two runs in the ninth before Chang finished off the win.

Josh Witte '24 had a masterful pitching performance in the second game for Grinnell, scattering eight hits and fanning seven over seven innings. Garrett Nasif '24 struck out the side in the ninth to get the save.

After Illinois College went up 3-0 in the first, the Pioneers went to work on their rally. Weirather had an RBI double to right in the bottom of the first, Nasif knocked in a run on a fielder's choice in the second and Porter bashed a two-run homer to left in the third to put the Pioneers ahead to stay.

Nasif added a sacrifice fly to center in the third and Weirather a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth to push Grinnell ahead 6-3. The Blueboys scored twice in the top of the seventh to reduce the gap to one, but Quinton McNitt '21 - who was hit by a pitch in the first game to boost his career school-record total to 28 - gave Grinnell some breathing room with a two-run double to left in the bottom of the inning.

The Blueboys closed within a run in the eighth before Nate Lu '21 and Nasif shut the door with their pitching.

Grinnell begins a busy week Tuesday with a solo game at Cornell College. The first pitch is at 7 p.m.
