Grinnell women's basketball can't quite climb out of early hole in loss to Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - Finding itself having to play catch-up from the start, Grinnell College's women's basketball team couldn't quite get over the hump in a 66-48 loss at Lawrence University Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-9, 2-5 Midwest Conference) were led by Erin Lillis' '24 game-high 21 points to go along with team-highs of six rebounds and two assists.

Payton Hall '25 grabbed eight boards and collected two steals, while Nicole Ware' 25 also had two steals.

Grinnell had the lead just once, that being when Lillis made a layup to start the game. It was still a two-point game at 15-13 when Sara Booher '25 scored inside, but Lawrence took off for a 19-13 lead by the end of the first period.

The Vikings (6-8, 3-3 MWC) built their lead to 10 points late in the second period, but Grinnell finished the half with a flurry as Sofia Ahooja '22 made two free throws and Lillis a trey to make it a 33-28 game at intermission.

Lawrence built its lead as large as 11 points in the third period and was up 50-42 at its conclusion. Grinnell could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Pioneers entertain Beloit College Tuesday night in Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
