Grinnell men's basketball team keeps rolling with huge win over MWC unbeaten Ripon

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's basketball team entered Saturday afternoon's game on a roll with three consecutive wins.

But that streak was in jeopardy Saturday as the Pioneers entertained Ripon College, unbeaten in the Midwest Conference and enjoying three wins in a row over Grinnell.

That wasn't going to deter the hosts, though, as they shot out to a 13-point halftime lead and held off the Red Hawks down the stretch to collect a 101-87 victory.

Grinnell, 4-4 in the MWC and 10-6 in all games, rode a one-two scoring punch led by Patrick Simms '22 with 20 points and Adam Phillips '23 with 19. Simms hit 3-of-6 shots from 3-point range and Phillips was 5-of-9.

Dean Mazlish '23 continued his recent tear with 14 points and Jackson Leone '25 tallied 12 with a 4-of-7 performance from 3-point land.

Simms also dished out seven assists, lifting him to 20th on Grinnell's all-time list with 171. Simms also had seven boards and four steals.

Grinnell never trailed, scoring 12 of the game's first 19 points and pushing the lead as big as 16 in the first half when Leone's 3-pointer made it 54-38. Ripon, 6-1 in the MWC and 10-5 in all games, closed within 57-44 by halftime and twice came within five points early in the second half.

The Pioneers continued to hold Ripon at bay and were up by nine with 5:30 left before putting a final nail in the coffin with a six-point run on a layup by Mazlish, free throw from Simms and trey by Phillips to make it 94-79 with 2:53 left.

Grinnell continued to cruise from there and ran out the clock in the waning seconds to celebrate the team's biggest win in some time.

Grinnell entertains Knox College on Wednesday. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
