Grinnell football team reaches historic territory with 28-20 victory over Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - With a 2-1 record following Saturday's 28-20 victory over Beloit College, Grinnell College's football team has moved into territory the program hasn't seen in more than a decade.

Before Saturday's contest at Rosenbloom Field, Grinnell hadn't been north of the .500 winning percentage mark at this point of the season since 2010 and only twice since 2001.

Grinnell stretched its winning streak against the Buccaneers to three games while rallying from a 10-0 second-period deficit.

Grayson Woodhouse '24 tossed for 169 yards and two scores on 15-of-25 passing, while Garrett Wilson '25 had four catches for 96 yards and Nick Rhinehart '25 seven snags for 49 yards. Danny Quirk '25 was the leading rusher with 56 yards.

The defense was equally dazzling, with Adam Khater '23 recording nine tackles, Clayton Burton '23 adding seven and Tim Johnson '24 and Jio Hong '25 five apiece. Grinnell also piled up six sacks, including 2.5 for Burton, while limiting Beloit to just 68 rushing yards.

Beloit brought a 3-0 lead into the second period and later scored a touchdown for a 10-point cushion. Grinnell then put a nice drive together which concluded with a 7-yard TD strike from Woodhouse to Ricky Morri '23. Rhinehart's extra point made it 10-7 with 6:35 left.

Late in the first half, Grinnell faced fourth-and-8 and prepared to punt. Instead, Morri took the ball and scampered 21 yards for a first down. On the next play, Woodhouse connected with Wilson for a 47-yard TD strike at the 1:20 mark. Rhinehart's extra point gave Grinnell a 14-10 halftime lead.

Woodhouse rushed for a 10-yard touchdown at the 8:22 mark of the third period and Rhinehart hit the extra point, giving the hosts a 21-10 lead.

Beloit followed with 10 unanswered points to pull within 21-20 by the end of the period.

Josh Jones '25 intercepted a pass early in the fourth period to thwart a Beloit drive and Luke Stefan '25 rushed for a 27-yard touchdown at the 7:12 mark to give Grinnell some breathing room. Rhinehart's extra point made it 28-20.

Grinnell's defense halted the visitors on downs on each of their next two series to preserve the win and send the hosts to 2-1 in the Midwest Conference. Beloit fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Grinnell is on the road for its next three games, beginning with a 1 p.m. test at Ripon College next Saturday.
