Grinnell volleyball team puts up strong fight at nationally-ranked Washington University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Grinnell College's volleyball team bounced back from a morning loss to give a tough test to the nation's seventh-ranked team at Saturday's Washington University-St. Louis Tournament.

After losing 25-8 and 25-17 to the nationally-ranked host Bears, the Pioneers stormed back to take the third set 25-22. Grinnell shot out to an 8-1 lead in the third, with Payton Lowrey '23 serving seven of those points and Nicole Mlynski '26 and Julianna Vajda '24 each recording two kills. The hosts rallied to go ahead, but Lowrey sparked a four-point service run for a 20-17 lead as the Pioneers cruised to victory.

Grinnell also got off to a quick start in the fourth set, leading 14-11 after three straight aces by Lowrey before the Bears rallied for a 25-17 win.

Malaina Miles '24 had eight kills to lead Grinnell, Emily Brewer '24 tallied 17 assists and Lowrey had three aces to go along with 14 digs.

Grinnell opened the day by suffering a 25-22, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-11 setback to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Hayley Taka '26 had 10 kills for Grinnell, Miles added seven and Vajda had six while hitting .333. Brewer led the assists department with 23 and Lowrey gained sole possession of the school's career aces record by tallying three. Lowrey now has 205 aces in her time as a Pioneer.
