Central pulls away late to defeat Grinnell women's basketball team

PELLA, Iowa - Grinnell College saw host Central College use big second and fourth quarters to secure a 73-57 women's basketball victory Wednesday night.

Grinnell (1-3) trailed just 14-12 after one period and tied the game early in the second frame before the Dutch pulled away for a 37-27 halftime lead. Grinnell edged closer in the third period, outscoring Central (2-2) by a 17-16 margin.

However, the hosts pulled away in the final frame to secure a 16-point victory.

Grinnell rode a balanced scoring attack, as Sara Booher '25 and Sarah Toay '23 each had 12 points, Erin Lillis '24 poured in 11 and Annabel Dougherty '25 had 10. The totals by Toay and Dougherty were both career-highs.

Booher boasted a double-double as she also had a career-best 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. Grace Marsh '25 and P.K. Hall '25 had five boards apiece. Hall also had a career-high three assists, the same total as Lillis.

Booher and Aiyana Rockwell '24 opened the game with baskets to give Grinnell a 4-0 lead before the hosts rattled off seven unanswered points. The Pioneers gained their final lead of 11-9 on two Toay free throws with 1:23 left in the first period.

Booher's layup to start the second period forced a 14-all tie, but Central came back with a 7-2 run and continued to roll for a 10-point halftime lead.

Grinnell got as close as eight in the third period when Lillis' layup made it 37-28. Twice in the final period Grinenll made it a nine-point game, the last at 57-48 on Dougherty's layup with 8:27 left. But the Dutch held off any other charges by the visitors on their way to victory.

While Grinnell shot better than 50 percent from two-point range, the Pioneers struggled from deep by going 0-for-17 on their trey attempts.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday at Lake Forest College. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
