Grinnell overcomes big deficit to nearly trip up Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - After spotting Lake Forest College a sizable advantage, the Grinnell College women's basketball made a furious comeback and made things very interesting.

But the Foresters hit their free throws down the stretch to cling to a 55-49 Midwest Conference win Saturday afternoon.

Lake Forest bolted out to an 11-2 lead, but Grinnell closed within 14-9 by the end of the first period. The Pioneers twice closed within three points in the second quarter, the last time at 22-19 on a 3-pointer by Erin Lillis '24. However, the hosts went into the locker room with a 26-22 lead.

Lake Forest, 8-16 overall and 5-11 in the MWC, opened up a 39-32 edge by the end of three quarters and built the lead to nine in the fourth period. With Lake Forest still ahead 43-36, Grinnell raced back into contention on a 3-pointer by Payton Hall '25 and layup by Aidan Coalson '22 to make it a two-point game.

The Foresters took off again and were up by seven, but the Pioneers responded as Aiyana Rockwell '24 hit a 3-pointer and Lillis sank two free throws to make it 48-46 with 55 seconds left.

Lake Forest followed with five free throws to close out the win.

Grinnell, 9-13 overall and 6-9 in the MWC, got a strong one-two punch from Lillis and Sara Booher '25 with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Booher's total was a career-high.

Coalson grabbed nine rebounds, Grace Marsh '25 provided a career-high two steals and Eva Carchidi '24 had one assist.
