Grinnell men's basketball team set to take on Cornell in MWC Tournament

RIPON, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team will look to make a late-season push when it faces Cornell College in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Tournament Friday.

Grinnell is the third seed and enters the 1:30 p.m. game in Ripon College's gym with a 16-8 record and 10-6 league mark. Cornell, the second seed, is 17-8 overall and went 12-4 in the MWC.

The teams split games during the regular season, each winning on the others' floor. The Rams won 101-92 at Grinnell in December, but the Pioneers returned the favor a few weeks ago with an 82-68 decision in Mount Vernon.

Grinnell's leading scorers this season have been Patrick Simms '22 (19.2 points per game), Aiden Gilbert '23 (14.7) and Adam Phillips '23 (14.6). Simms also leads the team in assists (5.7) and steals (2.5), while Will Bebee '22 and Tommy Smith '22 are tops in rebounds (6.1 and 5.3, respectively). Bebee is also the leader in blocked shots (2.4).

Cornell has been led in scoring by Cooper Kabela (16.2), Jordan Magnani (16.0) and Marcus Quirk (12.6). Logan Sharp and Quirk are tops in rebounds (6.6 and 6.0) and Mangini is the leader in assists (3.9). Mangini and Jayden Meeker are tied for tops in steals (1.0 each).

The winner of Friday's semifinal meets either top-seeded Ripon or fourth-seeded Illinois College in the title game at 3 p.m. Saturday. That winner earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
