Big Grinnell baseball rally falls just shy in loss to Rhodes

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Grinnell College baseball team refused to go quietly in Sunday afternoon's game at Admiral Fetterman Field, and nearly came away with a huge victory.

The Pioneers scored twice in the top of the ninth to pull within a run of Rhodes College, a squad that was receiving votes for the national rankings to open the season. However, the Lynx managed to shut the door to eke out a 6-5 victory.

Rhodes entered the contest well-seasoned, having taken two of three from third-ranked Birmingham Southern College a few weeks ago and playing in its 22nd game of the season compared to five for Grinnell.

Sean Richardson '24 swung the hot bat for Grinnell (2-3), going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Josh Witte '24 had a strong starting pitching effort, limiting the Lynx to just one run through five innings and striking out seven as Grinnell staked a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers' Luke Porter '23 scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and added a run in the fourth when he came across on a fielder's choice.

Rhodes (11-10-1) came alive in the sixth, scoring three runs to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Lynx added a run in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

Jack Gillespie '24 hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Richardson in the top of the eighth as Grinnell sliced the gap to 5-3 before the Lynx responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Things got interesting in the ninth inning as Matthew Inaba '22 and Evan Borberg '24 each walked and Cole Philpott '24 was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out.

Michael Flaherty '25 followed with a walk to push Inaba across the plate and Richardson lofted a sacrifice fly to left to make it 6-5. However, the Lynx closer got two strikeouts to finish off the victory.

Grinnell is back in action Monday against Centre College. Action is set for 1:30 p.m.
