Grinnell softball team uses big rally to topple Colby for first spring break win

CLERMONT, Fla. - Down, but never out.

That's the way the Grinnell College softball team played in Tuesday's opener against Colby College at Legends Way, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to post a 6-5 victory.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Pioneers and was the first win of their spring break trip.

Grinnell pounded out eight hits, including three by Amanda Ramirez '23 and two from both Kyra Killion '24 and Taylor Durak '24.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 got the pitching win, scattering five hits over 5-plus innings. Lane Kohler '25 shut the door to get the save.

Trailing by three entering the fourth inning, Killion got Grinnell on the board with a double to score Ramirez. The Pioneers went up 4-3 in the fifth as Samantha Chu '24 pushed across a run with a bases-loaded walk and Killion and Ramirez scored when Jasmine Oda '25 reached on an error.

Colby tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Grinnell bounced back in the sixth when Emma Nelson '23 reached on an error and Alexa Okada '24 walked before Ramirez plated both with a triple.

Colby made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh by scoring a run and putting runners on second and third before Kohler induced a groundout to end the game.

In Tuesday's second game, Grinnell built a 3-1 lead against NAIA opponent St. Ambrose University only to see the Fighting Bees score six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to win 11-3.

Grinnell was only outhit by St. Ambrose 9-8, with Ramirez and Emma Nelson '23 each getting two hits. Grinnell's runs came in the second inning when Lizzy Vermeulen '24 knocked a two-run double and Taylor Durak '24 contributed an RBI single.

Grinnell was supposed to have Wednesday off, but will now play the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. That game was slated for Thursday, but projected bad weather forced the move to Wednesday.
