Grinnell pitchers combine to tie school strikeout record against Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College pitchers tied a school record for strikeouts in a game during the opening end of a twin bill against Beloit College Monday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Paced by starter Josh Witte '24, the Pioneers struck out 18 batters on a chilly day to tie a mark established last year against Knox College.

Witte finished one shy of the individual school record by striking out 15 batters in six innings of work. He scattered three hits in the 5-3 Beloit victory.

Alex Love '23 fanned two batters in one inning of work and Garrett Nasif '24 recorded one K in two frames.

Grinnell outhit the Buccaneers 10-7, with Luke Porter '23, Jack Gillespie '24 and Evan Borberg '24 each collecting two hits.

Borberg also made his mark defensively at the catcher position, as his 19 fielding chances and 18 putouts both rank fifth in program history.

Grinnell shot out to a 3-0 lead, with Porter's RBI double to right field in the first accounting for the first run. Michael Flaherty '25 and Nasif each added run-scoring singles to right in the fifth.

After holding Beloit off the scoreboard for seven innings, the Buccaneers managed five runs in the eighth and made that lead hold.

Beloit (6-7, 2-1 Midwest Conference) took advantage of four Grinnell errors and pounded out 11 hits to complete the sweep with a 13-2 win in the second game.

The visitors tallied four runs in the fifth, three in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Grinnell kept the game going in the bottom of the eighth when Porter slashed a two-run single up the middle. The Buccaneers added three runs in the top of the ninth.

Sean Richardson '24 and Porter each had two hits for Grinnell (3-9, 1-2 MWC). Starting pitcher Ian Feld '25 was tagged with the loss despite fanning five batters in five innings.

Grinnell is back at it Tuesday with two games at Cornell College, beginning at 4 p.m.
