McCain has a hitfest for Pioneers in twin bill against Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team pounded out 12 hits in the second game of a twin bill with Lawrence University Saturday at Pioneer Park.

But the Vikings fared even better, rapping out 16 hits on their way to a 14-10 Midwest Conference victory on a blustery day. That completed a sweep for Lawrence, which won the opening game 11-0 in seven innings.

Mac McCain '25 had a big effort for Grinnell in the second game, going 4-of-6 at the plate with five RBIs, three runs scored and two homers. His homer total and 11 total bases both rank fifth in program history, and Grinnell's four overall homers rank sixth.

Shiva Bucklin '22 and Michael Flaherty '25 each had two hits for the Pioneers.

After falling behind 4-0, Grinnell tied it as Bucklin hit an RBI single to left in the first and McCain lifted a three-run homer to left in the second.

Lawrence tacked on five runs in the third, but Grinnell countered with four in the bottom of the inning as Bucklin put a homer on top of the batting cage beyond right-center field, Nate L'Esperance '23 came across on a double play, Flaherty scored on a wild pitch and McCain hit an RBI double to right-center.

Lawrence (7-5, 2-0 MWC) scored a run in the fifth to go ahead 10-8 before the Pioneers tied it in the bottom of the seventh as Garrett Nasif '24 homered to left and McCain towered one to the same spot as Bucklin atop the batting cage.

However, Lawrence scored two runs in each of the final two innings to come away with the win.

Lawrence rode a three-hit pitching shutout to earn the opening-game victory. The Vikings used four-run outbursts in the third and sixth innings to pull away.

McCain had two hits for Grinnell (3-11, 1-4 MWC), including a double.

The teams close out their series Sunday with a solo game at Pioneer Park. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m.
