GC baseball team sees early leads disappear in losses to University of Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team took command early in both games of a twin bill Sunday, but the University of Chicago rallied each time to collect the sweep.

In the opener, the Pioneers scored solo runs in the second and third innings before the Maroons scored four runs in the fourth on their way to a 9-2 win.

Grinnell shot out to a 6-2 lead in the second game, but again the Maroons chipped away to come away with a 7-6 victory.

Grinnell (4-15, 2-8 Midwest Conference) matched Chicago in the second game with 11 hits each. Will Richman '22, Matthew Inaba '22 and Ben Kelly '25 had two hits each with Richman and Inaba having doubles among their totals.

Kelly's RBI single through the left side in the second inning put Grinnell ahead 1-0 before Chicago scored twice in the third.

The Pioneers erupted for five runs in the fourth. Inaba pushed across a run on a sacrifice, another run scored on an error, Jonathan Gottlieb '22 hit a sacrifice fly to left, Kelly stole home and Luke Porter '23 lifted an RBI single to right-center.

Chicago (10-6, 6-1 MWC) cut into the gap with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and went ahead to stay with two in the seventh.

Grinnell outhit Chicago 10-7 in the second game, with Richardson, Richman and Inaba getting two hits apiece. Richardson had a double among his totals. Inaba hit an RBI single to right in the second inning and Porter sent a run-scoring single to left-center in the third to account for the Pioneers' runs.

Grinnell entertains Cornell College Tuesday at Pioneer Park. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
